Words that Burn is a dramatization of the WWII experiences of William Stafford, Lawson Inada, and Guy Gabaldon in their own words. The performance interweaves the stories of these three men who were involved in very different ways during WW II. William Stafford served as a Conscientious Objector doing alternative service, Lawson Inada, and his family were held in a Japanese internment camp. Guy Gabaldón, the third voice in this play, served in the marines where he saved many lives because he knew Japanese.
This dramatic work juxtaposes the history and perspectives of these World War II figures through a blend of poetry and prose written in their own words. Words That Burn by Cindy Williams Gutiérrez was the 2017 winner of the Oregon Book Award in drama.
